516 parents were notified last year about their child’s poor school attendance.

Of those 154 court summonses were also issue to parents in 2015 according to figures released by Tusla.

Schools are currently required to inform the Child and Family Agency if a student has missed 20 days of school or more under legislation.

The report released also highlighted worrying numbers of children who are still waiting to have a social worker assigned.

In December of last year there were 6,718 children still waiting and nearly 1,000 of them were called ‘high priority’.

There were 5,940 children recorded to be in foster care last year with nearly one third of them living with family members.

The most shocking figure however is the 43,596 children who were referred to the child protection and welfare service regarding welfare issues and abuse or neglect claims.

“At a difficult time and with limited resources, Tusla made a strong start to introducing reforms, transforming services and ultimately improving outcomes for children,” said CEO Fred McBride of the reports findings.
