Over the past number of weeks, parents and authorities alike have been sending out public warnings, urging people to be extremely cautious if considering the purchase of a hoverboard for their child.

Now, online retailer Amazon has added its voice to the debate, reportedly advising customers who have bought hoverboards from them to throw them away. The move is said to have been prompted by a safety watchdog’s call for retailers to remove the gadgets from their stores.

According to the Daily Telegraph, customers received the warning through an email sent out directly from Amazon.

Other retailers reported to have removed the hoverboards from their stores and sites include Argos and John Lewis.

Various brands of hoverboards have already been seized over faults, with technical issues such as faulty plugs and fuses causing the gadgets to explode. A number of families have shared stories of injuries inflicted and fires sparked from the hoverboards.

Fresh warnings over safety concerns follow the tragic death of a British teen this week, who was killed when he fell off his hoverboard and was struck by a bus.
