At least 10 children and one adult have been killed after the boats they were in were caught in a storm on Lake Syamozero in the Karelia region of Russia.

 

Police officials have said:


"We have found 11 corpses, of which 10 are children. Three people are still unaccounted for."

 

It is reported that around 50 people were on a boating trip on the Russian lake with the majority being between the ages of 12 and 15-years-old.

 

An unconfirmed report said 36 members of the group have survived as the search continues for the remaining few.

 

The instructor with the group was arrested as the inquiry began into the cause of the accident.

 

Mayor of the Russian capital, Moscow tweeted saying:

 

"In Karelia there was a great tragedy. On preliminary data Syamozero killed ten children from Moscow. Condolences to the family and friends."
