Five people were taken to hospital after a road accident in Mayo yesterday afternoon.

 

A van and a car collided near the town of Belmullet, Co. Mayo, resulting in serious injuries for the driver of the van, a man in his 40s. He was airlifted to Mayo University Hospital.

 

Two women in their 60s, a woman in her 20s, and a baby were the occupants of the other vehicle, the Irish Independent reports.

 

 

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

 

According to the Irish Examiner, the man in still in critical condition.

 

Gardai and emergency services assisted those involved in the accident around 3:15pm on Friday after receiving a call about the collision.

 

 

The road where the crash happened, at the Muinhin Bridge on the R313 from Bangor to Belmullet, was closed overnight from the Glenamoy turnoff. Forensic examinations are being conducted on the road.

 

As of this morning, diversions were still in place.
