We have heard a number of tragic stories about the young victims of blind cord strangulation in recent times, but this latest report highlights another danger.

A family court in the UK has found that a 14-month-old toddler died after becoming tangled in bedding while lying in a travel cot.

At the time of the incident, the child had been placed with a carer pending assessments of his parents by social workers.

The Nottingham court heard that the child had died after his brain was starved of oxygen, with an investigation then launched into the case, to determine the future of the carer’s career in the childcare industry.

Judge Lea delivered the ruling this week, stating that – on the balance of probabilities – the little boy’s death was a “tragic accident”.

While the judge made no findings of negligence, he did add that the child’s life might have been saved had the carer checked on the little boy.

“This has not been a straightforward case. Deaths with this combination of injuries are exceedingly rare,” said the judge.

This is an incredibly sad case, and one which highlights how vigilant we need to be with our children.
