It’s an unavoidable reality for most parents: at some stage, the kids are going to come home with head lice.

And while tackling them can seem overwhelming, trust us, it’s not as bad as it seems. Treatment has moved on a lot from the stinging, noxious-smelling lotions of old.

Here’s what you need to know:

Getting lice does not mean your kids are unhygienic

First things first, getting head lice does NOT mean your child is unhygienic or has a dirty scalp. Lice are equal opportunities – they don’t discriminate between a squeaky clean scalp and a dirty one. They’re parasitic insects, so all they want is to be able to lay their eggs in a warm environment, and feed on a supply of blood drawn from the scalp.

They’re spread by head-to-head contact

Lice don’t have wings, so they can’t fly. And despite the myths, they can’t jump or hop either. However they’re quick and can crawl from one head to another in the blink of an eye. And you know that static electricity you get from brushing dry hair? Well that can actually launch a louse right from one head to another!

Not everyone with head lice feels itchy

This is an important one that many people might not know. It’s assumed that itching is the common indication of head lice, but some people never get this symptom, while others may not get it for weeks after an infestation. Itchiness actually happens only in people who are allergic to head lice saliva, so make sure you’re checking the kids’ heads regularly.

Resistance can eventually happen with pesticide treatments

Studies show that head lice are becoming resistant to certain treatments, which can make eradicating the problem difficult. This is because they are pesticide-based, and lice can start to ‘resist’ the poison after a while.

There's a more effective way to kill lice and eggs

However, the Licener Single Treatment is different. Instead of using poison to kill the lice, the shampoo's active ingredient is natural Neem extract, which immobilises and suffocates lice, causing them to die. And it kills the eggs too, penetrating the tiny openings at the top of the eggs, blocking the oxygen flow and causing the carbon dioxide to build up so they suffocate and die. The shampoo is non-toxic, free from dangerous or flammable chemical substances, and works in just 10 minutes.
