Following the shocking tragedy that befell a number of Irish students while celebrating a 21st birthday party in California over a week ago, one of the survivors has spoken out in the aftermath of the horrifying event.

With remarkable poise, Clodagh Cogley updated concerned friends and family on her progress while appealing to all those close to her to live life to the fullest.

In a heartfelt post on Facebook, the university student thanked everyone for their well wishes before detailing the injuries she sustained as a result of the now infamous balcony collapse in Berkeley, writing; "Hey friends, just an update to let you guys know how I'm getting on (slowly catching up with the individual messages I promise!)"

Revealing the extent of her injuries, the young Irish student, who studies at Dublin's Trinity College, continued: "The fall from the balcony left me with two collapsed lungs, a broken shoulder, a broken knee, five broken ribs and a broken spinal cord... Meaning the chances of me using my legs again are pretty bleak."

The inspirational Clodagh exhibits courage and optimism as she turns her attention to the future, explaining: "Not the best odds but I'm moving to a great rehabilitation centre here in San Francisco for two months (it has dog therapy) and intend to give it everything I've got."

Remaining incredibly upbeat despite her trauma, Clodagh says: "Who knows maybe legs have been holding me back all these years and I'll realise my talent for wheelchair basketball."

Paying tribute to all those who tragically lost their lives at what should have been an evening of celebration, the young university student wrote: "The thing I'm taking from this tragedy is that life is short and I intend to honour those who died by living the happiest and most fulfilling life possible."

Encouraging others to do the same, the inspirational Dubliner finished by saying: "Enjoy a good dance and the feeling of grass beneath your feet like it's the last time because in this crazy world you never know when it might be."

Wishing Clodagh all the very best. She is a true inspiration.
