Telling your children that you can pregnant can often be met with a mix of emotions. While some kids will delight in the fact they are about to become a big brother or sister, not all of them will.

Their reaction can depend on their age, so keep this in mind when telling them. To help you get the conversation started, why not give them a book on pegnancy as a gift.

What Makes a Baby by Cory Silverberg and illustrated by Fiona Smyth
This book helps to explain where babies come from in a very subtle way. What’s great about it, is that it doesn’t go into the nitty-gritty of making a baby and gives you room to explain further, depending on what you think your child needs to know.

Baby on the Way by Martha Sears
This book helps to explain the changes that you go through, including morning sickness, and offers advice to kids on how to prepare for their sibling’s arrival. It has appealing pictures and a soft, warm tone throughout.

Arthur’s New Baby by Marc Brown
If your little one is a fan of the TV show Arthur, they will love this book on Arthur becoming a big brother. It is less factual that the other books, but will help ease any concerns your kids may have.

I'm a Big Brother by Joanna Cole
This is great for younger kids who won’t be able to grasp much more than there will be a new baby in the house. The pictures allow you to talk to your child about what is going to happen after the birth.

There’s a House Inside My Mummy by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Vanessa Cabban
This funny and easy-to-read story is told with a beautiful rhyming text and is about a little boy waiting for his brother or sister to arrive.

Let’s Talk About Where Babies Come From by Robbie Harris
The book covers all aspects of pregnancy, from conception to birth and beyond. It is an easy to read book and the squeamish bee and commentary from the bird adds a little humour to the book.
