Even the slightest hint of danger is enough to set our protective Mama Bear instincts in motion, and when we’re in that frame of mind there is pretty much nothing that can stop us.

Luckily for one five-year-old from Colorado, US, his own mother wasn’t about to give up on him this week without a serious fight.

According to reports, a woman managed to successfully fight off a mountain lion that attacked her young son in their own backyard yesterday.

The little boy was apparently playing in the garden with his older brother when the creature approached and attacked him.

A statement issued by authorities revealed that the mother was alerted by the screams of her boys, and she ran outside to take action.

“The mother ran outside, saw the mountain lion and her son, and was able to physically remove her son from the mountain lion,” the authorities said.

The children’s father immediately called the police to report the incident, informing them that he was on the way to nearby Aspen Valley Hospital with his injured son and wife.

The police statement added: “The boy sustained injuries to his face, head and neck. The mother sustained minor injuries to her hands and legs.”

The latest updates have revealed that the mother has been released from hospital, while the little boy – said to be in ‘fair condition’ – has been transferred to another hospital for further treatment.
