According to emerging reports, the Health and Safety Executive has announced that the owner of Alton Towers is to be prosecuted following an incident in the popular theme park last June.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974, Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd - the company responsible for Alton Towers - will face charges over a highly-publicised incident which left five people with life-altering injuries.

Commenting on the development, head of operations for HSE in the Midlands, Neil Craig, asserted: "This was a serious incident with life-changing consequences for five people."

Reflecting on the process, he continued: "We have conducted a very thorough investigation and consider that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in the public interest to bring a prosecution."

It has been established that Merlin Attractions Operation Ltd. will appear at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 22 April this year.
