Anyone whose life has been touched by Alzheimer’s will know the pain it can cause to loved ones, and so our hearts go out to the Napolitano family after hearing their heart-wrenching story.

Linda Napolitano was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s back in 2010, and as her condition deteriorated she moved her life to an Alzheimer’s community, with the support of her family.

It was a joyful moment for daughter Julia when she got engaged, but she was moved to sadness at the prospect of planning a wedding without her mother, who now no longer recognises her. Even more concerning was the fact that Linda would not be able to attend the wedding, as it would almost certainly be too distressing for her to leave the community.

This was where Julia had an idea; if Linda couldn’t come to the wedding, she would bring the wedding to her – anything to ensure that her mother was a part of her special day.

And so, after the church ceremony, Julia and the team at the care home organised for a special reception to be held there to include Linda. Everyone rallied around to ensure the party went off without a hitch, with Linda getting her hair and makeup done, and residents and employees alike all dressing up for the celebrations.

Recalling the precious day, Julia told Today: “I walked in, and the crowds parted, and then they brought my mum around the corner. That moment – when she got to see me in my dress – I can’t describe that feeling.”

The family believe that Linda – who enjoyed a dance with Julia’s father at the reception – enjoyed the day, and knew deep-down of its significance.

“We all truly believe that she understood there was something special going on,” she added.

Stunning photos of the day have been shared by Gravidee Photography and Design, and no doubt they will be treasured by the family for years to come.
