A mother of three-year-old twin girls has been the first victim to be identified following yesterday's shocking attack on the capital city of Belgium.

Adelma Tapia Ruiz, a native of Peru, was checking in at Zaventem Airport ahead of a trip to New York with her husband and two daughters, Maureen and Alondra, when the bombs detonated in the departures area of the international airport.

It is understood that Adelma's husband and their two young children survived the attack after leaving the check-in area together moments before the explosions took place.

Explaining the circumstances surrounding his sister's tragic death yesterday, Fernando Tapia, said: "They were in the Brussels airport. They were connecting through to New York to meet my sister Milenka Tapia. In the end this attack stopped this destiny."

Devastated by the events which sent shockwaves throughout the world yesterday, Fernando mourned his sister, saying: "She had also planned to come back to Peru this year. Now she can't come back."

According to Sky News, Adelma had been living in Belgium for nine years after marrying a local man.

Our thoughts go out to all those affected by yesterday's atrocities.
