Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar is understood to be looking into proposed changes to the rules regarding registration of a stillborn child.

As it stands currently, parents must pay €20 to receive a birth certificate for their stillborn child, a charge which has received huge criticism from parents.

It has only been possible to register a stillborn child since 1995 and according to the figures, 240 certificates were issued in 2014.

However, party colleagues are calling the charge for stillborn children grossly insensitive and have called for Minister Varadkar to abolish the fee.
