If a strategy is going to save lives on the road, then we are all for it, and so we welcome the news of a significant increase in speed camera spots throughout the Republic of Ireland.

An Garda Síochána today announced the addition of 355 extra speed camera spots across the country, which will be activated from midnight next Friday.

The move follows a five-year analysis of ‘high-risk’ areas nationwide, and the new speed cameras are being placed in those spots with a history of speed-related collisions.

Commenting on the announcement, Garda representative Aiden Reid said that safety is the motivating factor behind the move.

"The safety cameras are proven life savers and only operate in areas which have a speed-related collision history where fatal, serious injury and now minor injury collisions occur,” he said.

The announcement comes on the same day it was revealed that speed limits in Dublin City and suburbs could be dramatically reduced under proposed new bylaws.

According to reports, Dublin City Council is proposing to lower some traffic zones to a 30km-per-hour speed limit.

The recommendation follows an 18-month review of traffic conditions throughout the county, while the Council’s traffic department also considered submissions from its councillors as well as members of the public.

The Irish Times reports that, if the proposals are implemented, they will be introduced in phases starting from the end of 2016. The initial phase will see a 30km-per-hour zone created across the Royal Canal and Grand Canal areas of the city.
