Alcohol does have an impact on your partner’s sperm.
For years it was only mothers who were advised against drinking while trying to conceive and pregnancy due to the risk of foetal alcohol syndrome. True, if your partner drinks he cannot give your baby foetal alcohol syndrome, but he can compromise your chances of conceiving.
A 1994 study revealed that male alcohol consumption can hinder conception efforts. If you do become pregnant, your children could be smaller in size. Another possible outcome is that they will have compromised immune systems. Another possibility is that the children would have hormonal or behavioural disturbances. There are even studies showing a possible link between male alcohol consumption and hyperactivity in children.
Occasional alcohol consumption is not likely anything to worry about. But routine drinking could be. If your partner typically has a couple drinks a day or conversely he drinks five alcoholic beverages in a sitting once a month or more, then a conversation about reining in his drinking may be worthwhile.
Enlist the help of your doctor and have a conversation about cutting back. You’re both going to be parents soon and tipsy parents are not the best for baby!
