According to emerging reports, several people, including children, have been hospitalised after a blaze broke out in a Dublin apartment block last night.

It is understood that the fire occurred in the Mac Uilliam Lane apartment blocks in Fortunestown, Tallaght at approximately 11pm on Monday night in a terrifying incident which left residents trapped on the top floor of the building.

Three ambulance crews and one fire brigade attended the scene of the blaze which authorities believe was caused by refuse bags which were left on the communal stairwell of the building's second floor.

It has been established that five people have been transferred to Tallaght Hospital, but their injuries are not said to be serious.

According to the Irish Independent, firefighters remained at the scene until the early hours of this morning.
