The emergence of shocking images which show a child sitting on the windscreen wiper of a Luas tram while in motion has stunned internet users this week.

The photo, which has ignited much online discussion regarding the conduct of youngsters while in the vicinity of the city's tram lines, may act as a platform from which to establish a dialogue with children regarding public safety.

Commenting on the images which were initially uploaded to Facebook before attracting the attention of numerous media outlets, communications manager for Transdev - the company which operates the Luas - Dervla Brophy asserted: "This is a very serious and potentially fatal practice that needs to be stamped out."

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Ms. Brophy confirmed that the image had been brought to the attention of the gardai, saying: "The incident captured in the photograph was reported to gardai, and they have in turn spoken to the youngster's parents."

Appealing to the public to assist in the company's endeavours to protect the safety of staff, passengers and bystanders, Dervla said: "We are doing all that we can to reduce scutting on trams, but ask the public to report any incidents that they may witness."
