Following on from Leo Varadkar's announcement today that MenB vaccines will now be included in the Primary Childhood Immunisation Schedule in Q4-2016, concern has been raised regarding a potential shortage of the vaccine in Ireland.

According to MummyPages expert and qualified pharmacist, Sheena Mitchell, there exists considerable concern over the return of a continuous supply of the MenB vaccine due to an increased global demand.

While there may possibly be what has been described as “an intermittent supply” over the coming months, this cannot be guaranteed by either manufacturers or distributors.

However, reports do suggest that a steady supply should return to the market by the summer.

Acknowledging the potential anxiety that this development may cause innumerable parents around Ireland, Sheena advised users on her website WonderBaba that "it is worth remembering that bacterial meningitis is not common.“

“The best we can do as parents is be educated with regards of the symptoms which can be a sign of a meningococcal infection and to seek medical attention if meningitis is suspected," she recommended.

While news from the Health Minister that the vaccine will be available to newborns is welcomed, MummyPages are still urging mums and dads to sign the petition to make the vaccine available to ALL children under 12.
