We have heard of some absolutely tragic stories involving babies in recent times, and this one has tugged at the heartstrings of people all over the world.

Locals responded with grief and devastation after a newborn baby’s body was found on Maroubra Beach in Sydney late last year, with police unable to identify the child or its mother.

The tragic story has touched so many hearts, but one couple in particular were determined to do something to mark this child’s short life.

Bill Green and Filomena D’Alessandro recently decided to formally adopt the child, so that they can give her an identity and a proper burial.

Commenting on the decision to local media, Bill said: “We were at Filomena’s sister’s house and she read in the paper that the baby was going to get a destitute burial. She looked at me and said ‘that’s not going to happen.’”

After contacting the police and the coroner’s office, the couple were able to go ahead with their plan. The baby, a little girl, is now known as Lily Grace and her funeral will take place next week. The ceremony is set to take place in a designated area of Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park for children who have died without a family.

Bill, who is a father-of-three, added: “What my wife has done…Words cannot say what she’s been able to achieve.”
