There was widespread shock yesterday, when it emerged that sexual assault allegations had been lodged against an employee at a County Kildare crèche.

Today, it is reported that the suspect at the centre of the allegations is ‘no longer working’ at the crèche pending a garda investigation.

The news was confirmed to Independent.ie, with the source adding that the investigation is likely to last for a ‘number of months’.

The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Investigation Unit is heading the probe, but Tusla, the child and family agency, is also involved.

According to early reports, complaints were lodged within the past 10 days and relate to the alleged sexual assault of two children attending the crèche.

The as yet unnamed crèche is still open, but all parents of children attending have been notified of the allegations and investigation.

No arrests have been made yet, and authorities are believed to be organising specialist interviews with the children in the New Year.

We will keep you updated on the story as more information emerges.
