The public have been reminded that if approached by an individual purporting to be a member of An Garda Siochana, they are entitled to ask for and be provided with official identification.

The warning comes after a third woman was attacked and robbed by individuals impersonating gardaí over the weekend.

The 26-year-old woman, who was travelling in the Monart East area of Co. Wexford, pulled her vehicle to side of the road after being followed by a vehicle she believed to be a garda patrol car.

Upon stepping out of her vehicle at approximately 8.40pm on Saturday evening, the victim was attacked and robbed.

According to the Irish Independent, a small sum of cash was stolen from the woman, but thankfully she has been left physically unharmed.

Gardaí from Enniscorthy are currently investigating the case, and are keen to remind the public that while incidents like this are rare, it is important to always exercise caution.

Commenting on the three attacks which gardaI believe may be linked, a source said: "As a matter of procedure gardaí, whether uniformed or plain clothed must carry garda identification with them, and members of the public can ask for this to be produced if they are concerned. However, these incidents are very rare."
