Bizarre stories are par for the course these days when you open up your newsfeed, and this is one of the most shocking reports we have heard in a long time.

A Swedish court has rejected a father’s plea to have his paternity revoked for one of his twins.

The man and his then wife had undergone IVF using two embryos and sperm from other donors, in Latvia. Following the birth of their twins in December 2012 however, the father argued that he had only given permission for one embryo to be implanted.

He proceeded to take his wife to court in a bid to revoke his paternal rights to one of his now-three-year-old twins. The case went through several courts before the final decision was handed down today, by Malmo District Court.

Acknowledging that this type of case will likely become more common, due to modern advancements in medicine, Judge Svante O Johansson turned down the man’s plea.

“The consent in question means that the man had also expressed to the children a willingness to take on the legal responsibility as a father, and because there are no circumstances which mean the consent should not be ‘in effect’, the man should be considered the father of the children,” he said.
