There has been a spate of disturbing day care centre-related stories reported in recent times, and our hearts go out to the family at the centre of this latest one.

The owner of a Texas-based day care operation has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a baby girl in her care.

According to reports, three-month-old Amani Ball passed away in May after an apparent fall from a bed in Divina Archie’s in-house day care operation.

The local medical examiner later confirmed that the child died of asphyxia, allegedly after suffocating on a pillow after the fall.

Commenting on the charges, the child’s mother, Demesia Ball, told local media: “Being that my child couldn’t talk for herself, nor could she care for herself, it’s pretty much justice – justice for right now.”

Meanwhile, the mother’s attorney added: “This innocent little girl apparently died from falling out of an adult bed because the facility was not even equipped with infant cribs. They hope that the attention from this case may save other children and families from injury and death of their children."

Archie, who surrendered herself to police, took to Facebook to give an insight into her feelings on the ordeal, writing about “the hurt that I have lived and have to continue to live with for the rest of my life.”

The 44-year-old faces up to two years in prison. Her day care operation has also been shut down.
