It’s hard to imagine where many of us would be without the work of dedicated medical staff, and this point has been driven home today.

To mark ‘Thank a Paramedic Day’, the details of one Australian mum’s distressing emergency call have been shared with the world.

Colleen Constante has made headlines today, after sharing the story of the birth of her son Lucas – at 26 weeks into her pregnancy.

While Colleen could barely move after her ordeal, filled with concern for her baby, she managed to call paramedics at a local hospital, who talked her through the terrifying situation.

Operators spoke to Colleen and kept her calm for the following seven minutes, by which time emergency responders had arrived on the scene. While baby Lucas was crying when they reached him, he stopped breathing soon after, and he and Colleen were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Thankfully, 18 months later, little Lucas is healthy and thriving – something which Colleen thanks the paramedic team for on a daily basis.

In an interview with local media, the doting mum said: “They [the paramedics] never know what they’re going to get, they’re trained for everything. Hearing the stress in my voice, their main aim was to keep me calm and I think they did that really well.”

It’s so important to acknowledge the amazing work of these medical staff, and we’re so glad to hear that Lucas and Colleen are doing so well.
