Over the past number of months, we have been following the campaign led by the family of Jake Brennan, the six-year-old who was killed in a road accident last year.

Since his tragic passing, the Brennan family have campaigned tirelessly for the Government to reduce speed limits in housing estates to 20km per hour.

In the latest stage of their campaign, the Brennan family have received a boost from local government, with Fingal County Council backing a motion for the introduction of the 20km per hour speed limit.

Following mum Roseann’s protest outside the Dáil earlier this year, representatives from Fingal this week unveiled plans to bring her campaign to fruition in their locality.

In a post on the Jake’s Legacy Facebook page, the family wrote: “So happy to see that the Councillors are getting behind us and starting to reduce the speeds. We need this to start happening across the country immediately.”

“We thank any Local Authority that are putting our children’s safety as a priority,” they added.

The decision comes after Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe unveiled guidelines for ‘slow zones’ in urban areas across the country. These new measures give local authorities the power to introduce a 30km per hour speed limit in residential areas.
