A country is in mourning today following the tragic death of six schoolchildren in Rochefort southwestern France.

The accident, which took place at approximately 7am this morning, occurred when a truck carrying rubble collided with the childrens' school bus.

Offering an incident into the scene which greeted emergency services earlier today, Jerome Servolle, a police union official, said: "The word chaos is not strong enough. This is such a tragedy."

According to reports, 18 people were on board at the time of the incident which has understandably sent shockwaves through France today, with President Francois Hollande immediately sending his condolences to the families of the victims.

In an effort to gain further insight into the morning's horror, President Hollande insisted that everything would be done "to shed light on the causes of this tragedy."

Our thoughts are with all those affected by today's heartwrenching events.
