18-month-old twin boys have drowned after the buggy that was carrying them rolled into a canal in Arizona.

The infants' mother, Alexis Keslar, was jogging alongside the Yuma canal with her two young sons when she found herself being attacked by a swarm of bees.

In an effort to fend off the insects, the children's mum momentarily let go of their buggy which sped towards the canal and was quickly swept away by the strong current.

Their horrified mother attempted to rescue her sons, Silas and Eli, but to no avail.

The infants were eventually retrieved from the water by emergency services after the irrigation district reduced the canal's water level in order to save the boys' lives.

Tragically, the children did not survive the freak accident and were pronounced dead at the Yuma Regional Medical Centre.

In order to cover memorial and medical costs, the Kelsar family have received donations from members of the public who were horrified by the tragic accident.

Commenting on on the fundraising page she established in honour of Silas and Eli, family friend Marlene Glein said: "No parent should ever have to lose a child, let alone two."

Our hearts go out to the Keslar family.
