One person has been killed and many others injured following a road traffic accident involving 34 children from Lisburn, Co. Antrim this morning.

The incident, which occurred in Belgium earlier today, took place after the bus the passengers were travelling on collided with the pillar of a motorway bridge.

According to police reports, the vehicle, which was carrying seven adults and more than thirty children, overturned on the A18 in the Middlekerke area of West Flanders.

It is understood that the coach company involved in the shock collision, which occurred at 09.45 local time, is based in Lisburn, Co. Antrim.

According to media reports, photographs have emerged from the scene which indicate that not all passengers have thus far been freed from the vehicle.

Commenting on the aftermath of the accident, Janna Rommel-Opstaele, the mayor of Middelkerk said: "Some of the children with light injuries have been taken to hospital and local medical centres."

It is understood that police are currently investigating the incident, but were not available for comment.

UPDATE: 28/06/2015 11.43am: A spokesperson for the coach company has confirmed that despite earlier reports the school involved is not from Northern Ireland, but instead believed to be from England.
