A trip to the hairdressers is a luxury which many of us can’t afford, especially during this long, bleak January. However, even if you can’t afford to go, with so many home DIY kits you don’t really have an excuse to be walking around with roots down to your ears.

If you have never done it at home yourself, the following five tips will come in handy.

Choose the right colour

The last thing you want is to end up with a colour that is either too dark or too light. Without the help of a hairdresser you will need to be extra careful when making your choice. Go for one that is only two io three shades either side of your natural colour to be on the safe side.

Don’t do it on freshly washed hair

Wait a day or two after washing your hair before you attempt to dye it otherwise the colour might not adhere to your hair too well.

Wear old clothes

Unless you are lucky enough to have a hairdresser’s cape, avoid wearing clothes that you won’t want to see getting ruined. While it might not seem too important now you will be grateful if you do end up dropping some dye on you.

Read the instructions carefully

You can go wrong if you don’t read the instructions, so make sure you read them at least twice so you know exactly what you need to do for the best outcome.

Apply in sections

To make it easier, apply the colour to your hair in sections – you will also be less likely to miss a spot if you do it this way.
