Drew Barrymore described her third divorce as her "worst nightmare" in a candid interview with Ellen DeGeneres.

The actress explained that she'd hoped to raise her two daughters in a traditional family, and that splitting from husband Will Kopelman was a very difficult decision.

Drew and Will have remained amicable for the sake of their little girls, Olive, four, and Frankie, two.

Drew told Ellen: "I so wanted to raise kids in this ultra-traditional way and do everything so the polar opposite of my experience."

"And you know, it really is about the tone you set, and you can talk until you're blue in the face, but kids watch what you do every single day of your life, all day long; and that behaviour and that example and that love and community and honesty is just, I think, what's making everything feel safe for my kids."

Drew had been married to her third husband Kopelman for four years.

Drew first got married at just 19 years old to bar owner Jeremy Thomas but filed for divorce less than two months later.

She was also briefly married to MTV host and comedian Tom Green.

She explained she's now come to terms with the divorce: "The road is different than what you try to make it, or what you expected, and you just figure it out. And you figure it out with grace."
