This scheme allows mother and baby to go home as early as 6 hours after the birth, once baby and mummy are healthy. If your baby is born during the night then you can go home the following morning.
Before you can go home you will be offered a full assessment in the hospital to make sure both you and baby are healthy and fit to go home.
Once you have gone home, you will receive individual care from a midwife who will visit you about five times over the next seven days. On her visits she will ensure that both you and baby are doing well, she will advise you on feeding, she will administer the Guthrie/PKU or heel-prick test and she will weigh your baby.
Even if the hospital does not run a Community Midwives scheme, they may offer Early Transfer Home Scheme.
