By now, you will be well aware with the ‘Humans of New York’ Facebook page; an account dedicated to the real stories behind the faces on the streets. The page has captured some incredible stories in the past, but none as powerful as the following, belonging to this elderly widower.

 

In a post from this Monday, the man is seen standing outside of a bookshop holding a book of Shakespearean sonnets. The caption, a direct quote from the man himself, reveals that he lost his wife of 62 years in January 2015, and he feels her absence every day.

 

Paying a beautiful tribute to his wife, he said of love: “After 62 years, it becomes something different entirely. My wife used to say, ‘We are one.’ And believe me, she was not the type of person to overstate something. Now that she’s gone, I realise how right she was. So much of our lives were linked.”

“We were very physical and affectionate. But we also shared every ritual of our life. I miss her every time I leave a movie and can’t ask for her opinion. Or every time I go to a restaurant and can’t give her a taste of my chicken. I miss her most at night. We got in bed together at the same time every night,” he added.

 

As you can imagine, this beautiful dedication has sparked quite the outpouring of emotion on Facebook. Indeed, the comment section under the post is now filled with old photos of couples along with their beautiful stories.
