A zoo in Denmark has been the subject of intense criticism following their decision to dissect a young lion in front of hundreds of school children.

Odensee Zoo, which is located approximately 105 miles from Copenhagen, has been slammed by animal rights protesters who questioned the educational value of the exercise.

Despite substantial criticism, the zoo continued with the exhibit which was, unsurprisingly, incredibly gory in nature.

According to numerous reports, zookeepers displayed the creature's bloodied organs to the crowd while children and other spectators covered their noses against the animal's smell.

In a move which was bound to ignite further anger from animal rights groups, the zoo chose to hold the exhibit during a period in the calendar which coincides with children's school holidays.

Defending the move, zoo officials asserted that efforts had been made to re-home the creature which was at risk of fighting with other animals in the enclosure.

Odensee Zoo, which has been performing public dissections for more than 20 years, has been defended by many members of the Danish public who agreed with the zoo's justification for the exhibit.
