A family and their photographer have come in for major criticism after their ‘tasteless’ and ‘sexist’ Christmas card photo went viral online.

The unnamed family posed for a photo where the mother and two daughters wore tape over their mouth and were tied up in fairy lights, while the son gave the thumbs-up and the father held up a sign reading ‘Peace on earth’.

It was photographer Hannah Hawkes who shot the picture and shared it to Facebook, her accompanying message reading: “Finally, Peace on Earth!”

As you can imagine, the photo didn’t go down too well with internet users, and many people took to the social networking site to express their disgust over the seemingly ‘sexist’ and ‘tasteless’ photo.

She went on to insist that the “controversial” photo was intended as a joke, and that she does not advocate the abuse or degradation of women.

“This photo was taken with humour in mind, and was meant as a comical Christmas photo. I personally know this family, and have known them for many years. They are not abusive to their children in any shape or form,” she added.
