As the homeless crisis increases, every day we hear more and more shocking stories of families being forced to sleep on the streets as there is nowhere for them to go.

And, sadly, it has emerged that another young family has been forced to sleep on the streets, after it was found that Dublin City Council’s (DCC) credit card was maxed out.

The mother and her children in question had been staying in private emergency accommodation for a few nights before being informed the credit card had reached its limit.

According to Fianna Fáil councillor Jack Chambers, the family were then forced to sleep in an industrial estate for the night.

“This is an extremely disturbing development in Dublin’s spiralling homeless crisis. Homeless families were out on the street this week because the funds were not there to provide temporary accommodation,” the councillor told the Herald.

“The fact that something as banal as a credit card reaching its limit is all it takes for a homeless family to be thrown out on the streets will come as a shock to many,” he added.

DCC’s Central Placement Services uses a credit card to pay for hotels and BBs for families that are homeless, but with the increasing crisis that card had maxed out.

While the card's limit was increased after two days, the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive has said they are struggling to cope with the homeless situation which has seen numbers double from last year.
