The family of a young woman from Colchester who died from a particularly aggressive tumour which doctors originally mistook for pregnancy pay tribute to the young woman who "didn't have a bad bone in her body."

Demi Wright, who worked as a makeup artist, was just 22-years-old when she complained of back pain and discomfort in her side last November.

The young woman, who had been diagnosed with a benign tumour in 2000 at the age of seven, was subsequently brought to a maternity ward where high levels of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin - the hormone released during pregnancy - was found in her blood.

When ultrasounds failed to reveal the presence of a foetus, doctors assumed Demi had suffered an ectopic pregnancy so performed keyhole surgery on the young woman before ultimately discovering a mass.

Medical professionals quickly realised that the hormone levels were actually the result of a 12 centimeter tumour growing on Demi's liver -  a tumour which cost the young woman her life in February of this year.

Reflecting on the chain of events which devastated the Wright family, Demi's father Chris explained that news of a pregnancy was utterly unexpected, saying: "It was strange because she had been using the contraceptive pill and there were no other signs of her being pregnant."

"I went to an ultrasound with her and they were looking to see what was happening," he recalled. "By this point we knew she wasn’t pregnant but I just remember thinking a father should have been with his daughter for her scan, but not one like this."

Reflecting on his daughter's diagnosis, Chris continued: "The cancer had spread and her liver, pancreas and other body parts just weren’t working properly anymore. We thought we might have had a couple of months but she deteriorated rapidly."

Demi's family, who want to raise awareness of terminal adenocarcinoma so no one else has to endure the same horror as Demi, paid tribute to the young woman who never once cried during the final weeks of her life.

"She was in pain which was so hard to watch but she stayed so strong and her bubbly self," Demi's father recalled as he prepares for his daughter's funeral which is due to take place in Colchester tomorrow.
