An Italian father who couldn’t afford to pay his child maintenance fees resorted to using pizza as a substitute.

According to Il Gazzetino, Nicola Toso paid about €400 a month for his daughter following his divorce in 2002.

However, after he remarried, had three more children and was hit by the economic crisis, the 50-year-old struggled to pay it.

As an alternative, he offered his ex-wife, Nicoletta Zuin, and daughter free pizzas from the restaurant he managed – an offer she was not willing to accept.

Nicoletta took her former husband to court following his offer, but her complaint was not upheld. Judge Chiara Bitozzi said that Nicola had not committed a crime and he was aquitted of criminal charges of not being able to pay the fees.

In a surprising turn of events, according to the Evening Standard, the former couple’s daughter moved in with her dad in 2011 and Nicoletta was forced to pay €300 in child support.
