A firefighter came to the rescue of an Ohio mum on Thanksgiving, safely delivering her bundle of joy after she went into labour in the car park of a bowling alley.

Ashley Hochscheid was on the way to hospital with her husband Terry when she realised that her baby boy wasn’t going to wait any longer to arrive in the world.

“Once I got to the point where I needed to push him out, then it got intense and I was like, ‘Just get him out, get him out now!’” said Ashley.

Terry pulled over into a nearby bowling alley car park and called emergency services, with a fleet of firefighters arriving on the scene.

It was firefighter Andy Smith, who happened to have also delivered the first baby of 2014, in New York, who brought baby Ryland Hochscheid into the world.

Speaking after the traumatic birth, husband Terry had nothing but praise for his wife: “She did absolutely great. She’s by far the toughest person I know, the fact that she was able to get through that. A few loud screams, that was pretty much it.”

What an incredible story. We hope brave mum Ashley is recovering well.
