There is sadly another thing to add to the long list of things pregnant women can’t have.

While there have long been concern over mercury levels, it was announced today by the US Food and Drug Administation that women should "avoid all tuna" entirely, canned and fresh, for the duration of their pregnancy.

This is a change from the previous advice that tuna was safe for pregnant women as long as it was eaten in moderation.

The mercury found in fish like tuna can be very dangerous for unborn children, as overexposure can cause serious birth defects.

Pregnant women are also advised not to eat shellfish due to the possibility of bacteria and viruses contaminating the food.

Despite yet another fish being struck off the safe list, pregnant women are still strongly recommended to eat fish several times a week as it is full of protein, iron and omega 3 oils.

Salmon tops the list of fish good for pregnant women as it has among the lowest mercury levels, along with cod, haddock and trout.
