Christmas is such an exciting time of year for the children; there's magic in the air and little ones are beside themselves as they patiently await the arrival of the Man in Red. So, what can you do to ensure the kids are kept occupied in the run-up to the big day? There'll be endless options for you and the family - both outdoors and in - to ensure everyone is endlessly entertained, and we've listed a few below. Bundle up and get ready to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year.

Watch festive films

Spending an afternoon or evening watching Christmas movies is a must! Let each family member choose a favourite holiday flick to watch with the family. There are so many heartwarming classics to choose from; just make sure that everyone gets a chance to watch their chosen film over the break (the marathon doesn't have to be done in a single day!) to avoid the I-want-to-watch-this rows.

Christmas baking will go down a treat

The most festive time of year means treating the kids to some delicious Christmas cookies - these ones from Tropicana are particularly tasty; all the better if they've helped prepare them in the kitchen!  Children of all ages can get involved from stirring the batter, to adding the ingredients and helping 'taste' them as they are ready-to-eat from the oven. And don't forget to let the younger kids decorate cooled cookies. Older kids can pitch in at any stage. Afterwards, why not hold a 'tasting round' so that everyone gets to try one, and because cookie tasting is hard work, make sure those yummy treats all get washed down with a glass of Tropicana - save the milk (and a cookie or two!) for Mr Clause himself.

Make homemade decorations for the tree

The little ones will love this one. Because decorating a Christmas tree is already on your to-do list, why not make it extra special by getting them to each make their own Christmas ornament each year. Think cardboard, glitter and anything else they want to add to put an extra stamp on theirs. They'll look great on your tree and the making of them will keep the kids distracted and entertained for an afternoon.

Visit a Christmas event in your community

Coming together as a community is truly wonderful at Christmas. Plus, there's bound to be lots of fun the local festivals happening where you are that your gang will just adore. From tree lighting ceremonies in the main town square to festive jumper days and gorgeous concerts, there's bound to be something happening in your area.

Get the kids to help make a wreath

Everybody loves a festive wreath! Take the kids outside for a quick winter walk to gather evergreen branches and pine cones, trim some from the bottom of your Christmas tree or just buy some if you're worried about the mess. Attach your greens to a foam or wire ring (a bent metal coat hanger works well) and allow the kids to decorate it with ornaments and bows - and get them to design one decoration each to make it even more special.
