It has been announced that multinational furniture giant, IKEA, have issued a recall on two of their child safety gates following injury-related reports.

While the recall focuses predominantly on units in the U.S and Canada, the store has confirmed that it has received notice of 18 injuries worldwide.

According to the store, both the Patrull Klämma amd Patrull Smidig were deemed unsafe after it was established that there isn’t sufficient friction between the wall and the pressure mounted safety gate, an oversight which has now been deemed a safety hazard.

In addition to this, it has been established that the metal bar at the base of the gates, which are white in colour and made of a combination of steel and plastic, pose a tripping hazard.

Ikea have clarified that the gates are safe to use at the bottom of a staircase or between a doorway, but should not be mounted at the top of a flight of stairs.

As these particular gates have been retailing for almost twenty years, the warning applies only to models with a date stamp of 1510 or earlier.

IKEA has assured customers that those wishing to return these particular models will be issued a full refund or have the option of receiving a Patrull or Patrull Fast in exchange, both of which are suitable for use at the stop of a staircase.

Should they continue to use the gate between doorways and at the foot of the stairs, customers have been encouraged to contact IKEA in order to receive updated user instructions and new adhesive warning labels to attach to their particular model.
