Gardaí in Donegal are currently investigating a number of incidents involving a 'bogus' ESB worker who officials believe may be part of a county-wide scam.

According to the Irish Independent, the individual at the centre of the investigation has been calling to homes across Co. Donegal and requesting homeowners allow him to check the property's circuits boards.

It is understood that the individual then makes enquiries into the resident's schedule in order to plan follow-up repairs, and is said to have fled the home of one resident who requested he provide official identification.

Commenting on this particular aspect of the case, a spokesperson for the Gardaí insisted: "A legitimate workman will have absolutely no problem showing you their ID. If you are suspicious of someone then we would ask that you take details of the vehicle and pass them on so we can investigate."

Echoing these sentiments, a spokesperson for ESB Networks asserted: "We recommend that if anyone encounters someone claiming to work for or to represent ESB that they should ask them to produce their ESB ID card. If they remain in any doubt about their identity, they should contact the Gardaí."

Reminding the public to exercise caution when dealing with a house call, the Gardaí reiterate the importance of denying admittance to any individual who raises suspicion or sparks concern.

The individual at the centre of the Garda investigation was most recently seen in the Carrick area of Castlefin.
