Gardaí have begun an investigation after a man's body was found in a public toilet in Cork city centre, the Independent.ie reports.

The body was discovered in the restroom on the Grand Parade during a regular cleaning and maintenance inspection.

Emergency services were called in. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene before he could be taken to hospital.

According to RTÉ, the man was a 42-year-old Cork Co. resident on a night out with his family.

The area around the facility was sealed off by gardaí in order to facilitate a forensic examination, the Indepedent.ie reports.

They are also using CCTV footage from the area to determine what happened in the final moments of the man's life.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster will be conducting the post mortem examination at Cork University Hospital, which will include blood toxicology tests.

Gardaí emphasised that the results of the post mortem will be vital in determining the nature of their investigation.

There were no obvious signs of violence in the facility, and it was not immediately apparent how the individual died.
