Christmas and family movie fun go hand in hand, so come November we start to think about what exciting films will be hitting our cinema screens over the festive period.

And this year there are some brilliant family movies lined up, from Disney’s newest princess, to the much-anticipated new film from JK Rowling (eek!) to the latest Star Wars.

So earn some mum 'cool points' with our guide to the best family movies coming out this Christmas:

1. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Release date: 16 November

OK, OK, Harry, Ron and Hermione mightn’t be in it, but it’s still the magical wizarding world of Harry Potter, so that’s cool with us – and no doubt our kids. Set in New York – 70 years before Harry went to Hogwarts – Fantastic Beasts follows the adventures of Newt Scamander and a secret community of witches and wizards. We. Can’t. Wait.

2. Moana

Release date: 2 December

So it seems after the amazing success of Frozen, Disney is taking us somewhere hot and balmy this time... Hawaii! (phew, we say – we were really starting to feel the cold.) Yep, Disney’s newest animated flick Moana is set by the sea amongst palm trees and sandy beaches. Moana is Disney’s first ever Polynesian princess, and the movie follows her adventures as she sets sail in search of a fabled island in the ancient world of Oceania.

3. Molly Moon And The Incredible Book Of Hypnotism

Release date: 2 December

Based on the popular book series by British author Georgia Byng, Molly Moon is an exciting tale of a little orphan girl who discovers a magical book that lets her hypnotise people into doing what she wants. Molly escapes her nasty orphanage to seek her fortune in New York, but finds herself pursued by baddies who will stop at nothing to steal her magic book.

4. Ballerina

Release date: 23 December

Starring Elle Fanning, this animated tale follows a plucky orphan girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina. Determined to succeed, she leaves her rural home for the bright lights of Paris, where she manages to find herself a pupil in the Grand Opera house. Think Step Up, but animated, and suitable for all the family.

5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Release date: 16 December

Star Wars movies rarely need an introduction – the name alone has adults and children alike clamouring for cinema tickets. But Rogue One is different in that it’s a standalone movie that tells a completely different story from the other films. In this film, set before the time of Han Solo et al, rebels set out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. There’s nothing about this tale kids of all ages won’t love.
