The protective bond a mother develops towards her child cannot be broken, and this has been proven in the most heartbreaking way in the story of Rachael Martin.
The 29-year-old, from Warwickshire in England, has been hailed as a hero for sacrificing herself to save her five-year-old daughter last Friday.
According to reports, little Keira wheeled her scooter into the road just as a car transporter lorry was driving along. Heroic Rachael immediately threw herself in front of Keira, pushing the child backwards in a bid to save her life.
Sadly, Rachael was dragged under the wheels of the lorry and died from her injuries. Little Keira, meanwhile, suffered serious injuries to her pelvis but survived the ordeal.
After receiving initial treatment in hospital, Keira was transferred to St George’s Hospital in London for specialised treatment.
The Mirror reports that the late Rachael’s father, William Simpson, arrived at the hospital to hear Keira’s heart-wrenching tribute to her courageous mother.
“The first thing Keira said to me when I got there was, ‘Mummy saved my life, Mummy saved my life’. She just kept repeating it,” he said.
Mr Simpson added that Rachael, who was also mum to seven-year-old daughter Leah, ‘lived for her children’.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Rachael’s family at this time.
