An unplanned pregnancy can turn a young person’s life upside-down, and it can create an uncertain future for both them and their baby. It’s heart-warming to hear just how wonderfully things have worked out for Jillian Sobol, however.

Jillian has just graduated with her bachelor’s degree from San Francisco University – the exact same place where she was born and abandoned by her mother.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, the graduate explained how, back in 1984, a student at the college gave birth to her in a dorm room. She then placed the newborn in a cardboard box and put her in the college’s laundry room, knowing that someone would discover her.

That baby, Jillian, was rescued by a group of students and eventually adopted by Sam and Helene Sobol, who raised her in a loving family environment.

The road to graduation was not easy for Jillian, however; she struggled against dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder and other learning disabilities to get to this point, which makes the achievement all the sweeter.

While Jillian has never met her birth mother, she knows all about her start in this world, and she believes that the events of last weekend have brought her full circle.

In a letter to the University’s president, Jillian wrote: “Thirty years later I am here to face the past, complete the circle, and move forward, into the future.”

“Hope is the thing I believe my mother had when she made her choice. I’m here today making my own choices,” she added.

Jillian was joined on graduation day by Esther Raiger, one of the students who first discovered her in that laundry room and cared for her.

Congratulations to Jillian on her wonderful achievement; her story will no doubt serve as a beacon hope to many people.
