Recent reports have demonstrated the incredible power of social media, and this has been further proven this week by the story of Kathleen McGlade.

The 22-year-old, from Pennsylvania in the US, has always known that she was adopted, and launched a Facebook campaign this month to try and find her biological mother.

Kathleen, or Katie as she calls herself, posted a photo of herself holding a placard, which read:

“Hi! My name is Kathleen McGlade and I am trying to locate my birth mother. I was born at home in Easton, PA on September 21, 1992 and brought to Easton Hospital in Boston, PA. I was then put up for adoption through Catholic Social Agency Diocese of Allentown. Please share this and help me find her!”

Katie resorted to using Facebook, as the agency she was adopted through no longer exists. However, she told People that she wasn’t expecting much from her campaign.

Fast forward a few days later, and not only has her campaign gone viral, but she thinks it may have connected her with her biological sister. In an amazing turn of events, Katie was this week contacted by a girl who recognised the details of the story and reached out to her about organising a DNA test.

The 22-year-old went on to set up a GoFundMe page in a bid to raise money for the testing procedure, but Ancestry.com has now offered to test the potential sisters for free.

What an exciting turn of events. We’ll keep you updated on Katie’s story as it progresses.
