Maria Isabel Mariani, also known as Chicha, has been searching for her granddaughter for half her life after she was taken from their home at three months of age.

Clara Anahi Mariani Teruggi’s parents, Daniel Mariani and Diana Teruggi, were members of the Montoneros left-wing group and during the kidnap, Ms Teruggi was killed.

92-year-old Maria from Argentina has been searching for Clara for half of her life after setting up Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, an organisation that tries to find children kidnapped during the Argentinean military dictatorship in the late 70s and early 80s.

After announcing on Christmas Eve that she has finally found her granddaughter, Maria was sadly told yesterday, after a DNA test, that there is no genetic match between the two.

According to the Anahi Foundation, an organisation set up by Ms Mariani after stepping down as president of the Grandmothers in 1989, the grandmother is obviously upset.

"It was a hard blow for Chicha," said Juan Martin Ramos Padillahe, spokesman for the Anahi Foundation, adding that she is determined to carry on.

"She is 92 and will continue searching for her granddaughter. We just hope to be able to find her."

The BBC has reported that there is no suspicion of an attempt to deceive either of the women.
