In cases of emergency at home, the vast majority of us like to think we would be able to maintain a level head, but sometimes this isn't always possible.

Thankfully for Ursula Doran-O'Rathallaigh from Co. Kildare, a recent emergency in the home highlighted just how capable her two young grandchildren can be in times of crisis.

Recounting a recent traumatic incident which saw her collapse while caring for four-year-old Nathan and six-year-old Katelyn, the proud grandmother pays tribute to her brave grandkids who immediately sprung into action.

After seeing her grandmother suffer a seizure, Katelyn began administering mouth-to-mouth while her younger brother performed chest compressions.

Ursula, who had suffered a similar seizure 18 months ago, recalled the incident, saying: "This time, because Katelyn was there with Nathan and took control of the situation, she laid me down and turned me on my side - so she kept me safe."

Paying tribute to Katelyn's father for teaching his daughter the importance of first aid, Ursula continued: "She quickly taught Nathan how to do the chest compressions and then proceeded to try to do mouth to mouth, but I had bitten my tongue so there was a bit of blood about."

Having called for an ambulance, Katelyn kept a calm head and ensured her grandmother was properly cared for while awaiting the arrival of emergency services.

"[She was] in control of the situation and looking after me and keeping my grandson calm and busy. You know, she took control at six years of age," Ursula explains.

Eager to highlight the importance of first aid, Katelyn's grateful grandmother gushed: "This is why I'd like everyone to hear the story because I think they should all be taught basic first aid."

"It wasn't until the next day that I realised what she had done and her contribution. I had no other injuries this time and that was definitely as result of Katelyn," she asserts.

A massive well done to Katelyn and Nathan - we can only imagine how proud your family must be of you both!
