It’s a topic that has captured a lot of headline space in recent years, and one that has devastated families all over the world, and now a couple have shared their ordeal as a warning to others.

Feliciano and Maria Jose Saba, who moved to Co. Armagh from Guinea-Bissau in Africa, have spoken of their heartbreak after their two-year-old son Bryan died in a blind cord accident.

The family had only been living in Portadown for two weeks when Bryan accidentally got caught in a blind cord in the family’s living room, last month. He was rushed to hospital after being discovered, but he tragically passed away a fortnight later.

Now, his devastated parents have urged other families to be aware of the risks posed by blind cords, so that they never have to go through the same trauma.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Mrs Saba said: “The law should be changed to stop these blinds with cords being used. This should not be a taboo subject to people – they should talk and share and pass information so that it can be shared to protect others.”

“We could never have dreamed that a blind cord could be so dangerous. I would warn the children about the stairs, but never could I have imagined that a blind cord could have done that to a child. If I had had the information, I would have taken measures to protect Bryan,” she added.
